Get behind the wheel and make a difference!
Just think – a few hours of your time can help turn good food destined for waste into nutritious meals for hundreds of vulnerable people. If you drive and have some time to help your local community, FareShare Cymru needs you! FareShare Cymru needs volunteer drivers to deliver food supplies to community centres, refuges, hostels and charities in South Wales.
Gary has been a valued volunteer driver for over a year and comes in three days a week to load the vans and drop off deliveries. He can now wrap stretch film around a fully loaded pallet faster than you can say “redistribution”.
“I was here on placement from a JobCentre and Gerry [FareShare Cymru Operations Manager] wouldn’t let me go! I feel part of the furniture here now and I’d only be at home playing computer games otherwise.” To Gary, being a volunteer driver has many bonuses. “It’s fun, and if I wasn’t here, they wouldn’t eat.”
It’s not only the reward of delivering much-needed food to the community that motivates Gary to volunteer his time, but also the invaluable benefits to his mental health. “It deals with my depression; if I wasn’t here I’d be on my own in my house getting worse and worse. When I’m here I’m interacting with people and making a difference.”
FareShare Cymru saves good food destined for waste and redistributes it to community groups and charities who transform it into nutritious meals for vulnerable people. Helping charities provide healthy meals has knock-on benefits: FareShare Cymru estimates its member charities save between £380,000 and £500,000 off their food budgets every year, allowing them to provide more vital support services for the community.
